Music Sampler

Here are a few of my favorite chants for the Archive, arranged in short collections each of up to ten chants played as a continuous group as if on a CD.

Sample 1 is provided with texts and translations, and also a few clues as to how the Old Testament words were used in Christian liturgy, and how the melodies can be heard in that context. This sample is intended especially for those listeners who may be encountering Gregorian chant for the first time,  and who feel the need of some comment as to what a specific piece of chant might mean, or how they should understand it.

The other samples each contain chants that I hope make good listening as a group. Usually each group shows what seem to me to be similar but individual realizations of a particular melodic mode or style of melody.
