Graduals in Modes 2 & 8

The melody of the twenty-three second-mode Graduals (nos. 1–23) is universally regarded as one of the most beautiful in the Gregorian repertory, and rightly so. Without idiosyncrasy, it flows through a series of moderately melismatic phrases, harmoniously proportioned, intricately detailed yet sweeping in their larger contours. The melody can be regarded as serene, or as intensely expressive.

“GT196” gives the page reference to Graduale triplex. ”M80” gives the number of the Mass formulary in Hesbert’s Antiphonale missarum sextuplex.
