Graduals in Mode 5 for Saints

Graduals in fifth mode for saints’ days (the Sanctorale) make intensive use of the same family of melodic idioms as those in fifth mode for feasts and Sundays, and also show an expansion of range and duration as greater or even, in some cases (such as Adiuvabit eam), a little greater. These can be brilliantly celebratory pieces.

Abbreviated references used here include the following: In the first gradual, ”Ps. 45:6” means that the words “Adiuvabit . . . commovebitur” are taken from Psalm 45 verse 6. ”V. 5” means that the words “Fluminis . . . Altissimus” are taken from verse 5 of Ps. 45.

“GT526” gives the page reference to Graduale triplex. ”M30” gives the number of the Mass formulary in Hesbert’s Antiphonale missarum sextuplex.
